Hallux Magazine Team Writing Competition

The annual Hallux Magazine Writing Competition initiated by Roberto De Los Santos and Zehra Kazmi started in 2018 is to inspire and recognize Podiatry Medical Student writers for their community service contribution at a national level. The writing competition plays a role in enhancing emerging student leaders while also expanding the audience for this literature. A total of $1,200 cash prize will be divided among the schools to support the writing team and help them focus on their continued local community service mission.

Our mission is to empower future doctors, regardless of financial background. We believe deeply that crucial medical knowledge should be accessible to all those who seek it. This is why we provide support in the form of resources to students through the annual Hallux Magazine Writing Competition.

To apply for a scholarship, we ask you to fill out the form on this page and give us some insight as to why you are seeking the support.

Prompt 1: Covid-19 and other national crises put a massive burden to America in 2020. As a podiatric medical student, what has kept you motivated in either classroom or clinical rotations? What have you personally learned or adapted through those tough situations? (1000-3000 words)

Prompt 2: Regardless of career choices, mentorship is essential to individual’s growth both personally and professionally. In your professional life, who has made the most impact to your medical education? What is the most helpful advice have you received from him/her? In what way do you exploit the given advice(s)? (1000-3000 words)  

Prompt 3: As a future healthcare provider, you are in charge of looking out for your patient’s mental health (on top of their chief complaints). In your opinion, how important does mental health play in a physician’s competency? In your personal experiences, what have you done in order to balance your mental health with your physical health? (1000-3000 words)

Hallux Magazine Writing Competition Rules & Regulations

1. What is the criteria needed to apply for this scholarship?Must be a current, good standing, podiatry student club organization identified by their university/college in the U.S., respectfully.
2. How many authors must be on the submitted writing piece?Must be written by 2-4 authors as a group to represent the organization. Entry CANNOT be done by a single individual author; the idea is that this is a team effort.
3. Is this a single author writing competition?No, this is a group writing competition meant for established student organizations in current good standing from one of the U.S. podiatry medical schools.
4. What year student can submit to the competition?Must be written by current podiatry medical students in their 1-4 year. CANNOT be written by staff, DPM, or director.
5. What is your stance on plagiarism?Plagiarism will NOT be tolerated and will not be included in the judging competition
6. How is the Judging process performed? The completed Written Piece will be published (upon approval) by Hallux Magazine. The panel judges are Hallux Magazine and PrePodiatryLife team members.
7. The judging panel will place scores in a scale of 1-10 based on the following:– Does the hook pull you into the story?
Interesting, Intriguing, Creative, Inspirational
Spelling, Punctuation, Grammar
– Level of Detail to support story.

8. One winner per school will be chosen, for a total of 5 winners:1st place – 300$ + certificate + personal interview + honorary shirts
2nd place – 100$ + certificate
3rd place – 100$ + certificate
